Can I take a reading of a competitor?

Yes. It is a single fetch of a public page, identifying itself honestly, doing nothing a browser would not do. The comparison tool exists specifically for this.

Read the gap carefully, though. A competitor beating you in results while reading colder than you is telling you something important: whatever separates you is not observable from the page, so no amount of technical work will close it.
